Step Brothers (15) **** - Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen.

THE classy double act of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who last teamed in the box-office smash Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, are re-united for this decidedly above average comedy that is something of a return to form.

While Talladega Nights was sporadically funny, Step Brothers is a far more even and polished piece of work.

Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a 39-year-old bum drifting in and out of employment, who lives with his mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen).

Reilly is Dale Doback, a 40-year-old who is almost as much of a lost cause, unemployed and living with his father Robert (Richard Jenkins - Six Feet Under’s deceased patriarch Nathaniel Fisher).

When Robert and Nancy get married and move in together, Brennan and Dale’s world collide and they are forced to live together as step brothers.

The humour may not be sophisticated but it is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny and the pair are superb together with some inspired scenes.

A fight with a group of children is likely to leave you with tears of laughter.
