REGARDING Phil Tibballs' excellent report in the Penarth Times (May 8) of the predicament Neil Munn and the Penarth ABC is in, because of the condition of St Paul's Church building where he operates from.

I, personally, have followed Neil's progression from amateur boxing out of Grange Catholic boxing club - representing Wales, in what was described to me as a very promising career, into the inevitable professional ranks of the sport, in the Eddie Thomas Camp.

Neil, after retiring with a string of successful fights, turned to promoting the amateur stage of the sport in Penarth and again, is very highly esteemed among other clubs in Wales.

In particular, he has encouraged and taught many lads ranging from the very young into the late teens and further into grand ambassadors of their chosen sport.

I only hope that the Vale's representative, Dave Knevett, manager of Leisure and Tourism, can see further than the bureaucracy that follows decisions of this nature and can come to a rapid conclusion in their feasibility study, thus giving Neil and his club the go-ahead to carry out these urgent repairs - bearing in mind that the Penarth ABC is prepared to foot the bill - as a matter of urgency.

I, as a rate payer, see no problem and would urge other Penarthians to give Penarth ABC wide support before this building is allowed to fall into the sad category of 'unrepairable', and in doing so, give Neil some recognition for 15 years of unstinting work with the young people of Penarth.
