I RECENTLY read an item of local history regarding the old Penarth dock to Cardiff bay 'subway tunnel'.
Out of interest to Penarth Times readers, I can forward some photographs taken by my friend Mike Barnett, who was employed by the South Wales Electricity Company to oversee the decommissioning of redundant power cables that were in place through the subway.
He was witness to what I can only describe as the sorry demise of what could have been a tourist attraction in the Bay development.
In one picture the date of the tunnel's completion can be read as 1899. This section is now erected as an epitaph at the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club on the Cardiff Bay side of the River Ely.
All parts were manufactured by a company named on the inscription as T Gregory Engineering Works, Taffs Well, Cardiff.
The subway was a salute to the marine engineering required.
