Dinas’ Danny bowls ’em over!

WITH the cancellation of Saturday's league matches, the only cricket last weekend involving Dinas Powys was a Sunday fixture against Bridgend Town on Dinas Powys Common.

The returning captain Miles Wilton won the toss and had no hesitation in inviting the guests to bat first on a green but hard wicket.

It was hard going for the opening bowling pair of Mike Lowe and Olly Coughtrey, with the Bridgend opening pair playing defensively, putting away anything loose.

However, the breakthrough came in the eighth over, when the ever-improving Coughtrey managed to get the Bridgend opening bat to play at one, and Steve Bussell caught the ball at point, with a Jonty Rhodes-style diving catch.

After Lowe and Coughtrey (1-19) had bowled their full allocation of eight overs, Bridgend were 47-1.

However this was the beginning of the end for Bridgend, as new recruit Danny Zaman was introduced and his bowling proved to be a match-turner.

From his five-over spell, with three maidens, two of them wicket maidens, he took five wickets and conceded just two runs!

Thanks to Danny and Steve Bussell, who took very good figures of 5-1-8-2 and a run-out, Bridgend suffered an almighty collapse.

In the space of ten overs, Bridgend Town went from 47-1 to 62-9!

It was up to Simon Wilton to take the final wicket of the Bridgend innings, bowling the number 11 batsman after he had played on.

So Dinas Powys dismissed Bridgend Town for just 68 in 26.5 overs.

Early tea was taken and Dinas Powys took to the task of wrapping up a very convincing win.

This was achieved within just 12 overs, with Steve Bussell finishing with a 40-ball 50 not out, with M Ali finishing 5 not out.

The only casualty in the run chase was new recruit John Lee, who supported Steve with a patient 13 before being caught and bowled by D Boyce.

Next week the Sunday XI travel down the M4 to Blaengarw, while the highlight of the week has to be Saturday, as both Firsts and Seconds meet their counterparts from Barry Wanderers.

The Firsts are home at Bryn y Don, while the Seconds make the short trip to Hayes Point for what will be an exciting day for both sides.
