A job well done for Sports

SULLY SPORTS 6

AFC CAERPHILLY 0

THE PITCH at Sully certainly didn't live up to the conditions for this South Wales Senior League first round Bruty Cup match.

With the grass threatening to engulf many of the smaller players, Sully entertained a Caerphilly side of whom they knew little about other than they were lying near the foot of Division Two.

A potential banana skin indeed!

Sully were hoping to field a changed line-up to give some of the fringe players a chance to show what they could do.

However, with players turning up late, stand-in manager Adam Govier was left with little choice but to field a tried and tested line-up with a welcome return to the front line of number 10, Spencer Lamb after a lengthy lay-off.

Indeed it was Lamb who manufactured the first goal when he showed his quality to spin inside the box and fire into the back of the net to put Sully one up within the first 20 minutes. Another followed when a fine move down the left saw Lamb add his second.

Sully looked lethargic perhaps because of the heat, the length of the grass and their mid-week excursions but were still producing some quality football in patches.

The centre half pairing of Taylor-Moore and Jones looked comprehensive in dealing with the aerial threat of Caerphilly and with Yarr and Taylor-Gibbs serving up a treat down the left it was not long before Sully scored their third goal, Joseph Hinds showing great strength in the box to fire home.

With the job effectively done in the first half, Sully then looked to give their substitutes a run out and they all played their part.

Prosser caused the Caerphilly defence some agonising moments down the right and it was his pass which released Lamb again for his hat-trick, albeit a fortunate strike that squirmed in under the keeper.

After some delays for Caerphilly injuries and the 'magic sponge', Sully added a fifth when Jo Hinds stretched for the ball after neat work by Lamb.

He was first in a queue of three players to stab the ball home as Sully threatened to run riot.

Fine work in midfield from Nigel Underdown and Ben Luck saw the latter release Jermaine 'Buddha' Martyn and his fine skill took the ball around the keeper for Sully's sixth and final goal.

This can be considered a job well done by Sully although they didn't play to their best ability. Against a better side the mistakes would have shown through and they must now raise their game for some difficult league fixtures in the coming weeks.

Having said that these games have to be won and Sully are now in the hat for the second round.

Sports travel to champions Fairwater on Wednesday looking for revenge after their recent home reverse.

On Saturday all Senior teams have a free day due to the Wales game in Cardiff.

In the Vale of Glamorgan Premier League Sully opened with an excellent win over Dinas Powys by 8-3.

Jacob Constant with four goals and an Andrew McIlliney hat trick added to an Andrew Hughes effort saw Sports comfortably home in very hot conditions at Swanbridge.

The pitch was in exellent condition after the work put in by the ground staff in collecting the grass. A special mention to Sandra Mullins who did so much work to clear the pitches. Shame on you boys!.

More volunteers are required to bring the pitches up to scratch after the unbelievable growing conditions this early season.
