Brace of wins for Cogan

7:20am Thursday 4th September 2008

LLANRUMNEY UTD 1

COGAN CORONATION 2

COGAN continued their improving start to the season with a 2-1 win over Llanrumney Utd last Wednesday night.

Building on their form from last week's fightback against Sully, Cogan quickly gained the initiative and deservedly took the lead via a well taken finish from Nathan Self within 5 minutes.

The goal followed fine work by Scott Muir and Kevin Boulton down the right.

It was the first time that the team had taken the lead in a match this season and spurred Cogan on to seek a second.

By now the Cogan back four were well on top of the Llanrumney attack with Matthew Slugg in goal untroubled.

The Cogan midfield of Boulton, Jones, Gillies and Bramhill were regularly supplying the front two of Muir and Self and it came as little surprise when Muir doubled the lead after 20 minutes.

Cogan continued to press for the remainder of the half and the match was almost settled before half time as a rare moment of Gillies flair led to him providing a deft dummy into the path of Self who agonisingly hit the post with only the keeper to beat.

The second half proved a sterner test for Cogan as Llanrumney upped their work rate and pressed the Cogan midfield. The pressure eventually led to Llanrumney pulling a goal back early in the half - despite Slugg making a good save from the initial shot.

The goal galvanised Llanrumney and only last gasp defending prevented an equaliser shortly afterwards. Eventually Cogan settled again and regained the initiative with Muir, Self and Taylor all going close to settling the match.

A tense final 10 minutes followed with Clarke, Woodhead, Drew and Haddon holding firm alongside the rare sight of Humphries defending on his own penalty area.

CADOXTON FC 1

COGAN CORONATION 1

(Cogan win 4-2 on pens)

On Saturday Cogan travelled to Bryn-y-Don to play local rivals Cadoxton FC in the first round of the C W Bruty Cup. On a scorching hot day it was typical of Cogan to fail to win within the regular 90 minutes and to end up playing extra time and going to penalties!

Cogan took the lead via Self, again within the first few minutes. All appeared to be comfortable for Cogan with the new 3-5-2 formation allowing them to dominate and create countless gilt-edged chances in the first 30 minutes.

However, despite these chances no further goals followed for Cogan who were left to regret the misses when Cadoxton equalised with an unstoppable 30 yard volley past Slugg.

The goal remained Cadoxton's only shot of the whole match as Cogan then continued to miss chance after chance. Thankfully, Cogan were not left to rue their missed chances as penalty takers Wingren, Self, Boulton and Bramhill all scored to complement a fine penalty save by Slugg.

Cogan's next home match will be against Ynyshir Albion on Saturday, September 13, kick-off at 2pm.
