Injury time choker for Dinas

THE DINAS Powys Welsh League First Division team suffered their first defeat of the season in this tough encounter, and although they had more goal scoring opportunities Cambrian won because they scored from three of the four chances they had during the game.

Dinas made a good start and it looked as though they would overwhelm their opponents.

They took the lead as early as the fourth minute when Mathew Hopkins got his head to a David Brooks corner and when a defender tried to clear his lines the ball rebounded into the net for an own goal.

Another Dave Brooks corner hit the crossbar while at the other end Cambrian's Jason Bartolli and Kris Rees had shots off-target.

On 25 minutes Ebony Dixon could only head wide from a Geza Hajgato free-kick and new signing Drew Sherman's 25 yard shot brought a spectacular save from Jarred Howells in the Cambrian goal.

Just before half-time Cambrian scored the equaliser with their only real opportunity of the half when Darren Jones was left unmarked to head in a free-kick at the far post.

Cambrian had an early chance five minutes into the second-half and Dinas were thankful to keeper Chris Golton for a smart double save. Dinas nearly regained the lead from a Liam Palmer long throw when Danny Kinsey headed on, but Ebony Dixon's header rebounded from an upright and was cleared by the defence.

Geza Hajgato chipped his free-kick just wide of an upright and Ebony Dixon brought a good save from Cambrian keeper Howells. In the 85th minute Dinas took the lead with the best move of the game; fittingly it was Geza Hajgato who started the move by winning the ball on halfway before moving forward and crossing low, and substitute David Ham laid the ball off for Jacob Daly to fire home from 12 yards.

If Dinas thought they had done enough Cambrian and the referee had other ideas and a couple of minutes into injury time Kris Rees's cross was headed in by Dane Williams to level the scores.

Then in the eighth minute of injury time, as Cambrian pushed forward searching for the winner, a Dane Williams long range shot somehow found the head of Lee Mathews who had the easiest of jobs to head in from five yards to give the home side a much needed but somewhat fortunate win.

NEWPORT YMCA 1

A goal down within two minutes Dinas responded well and in the first-half caused the Newport defence great problems with their pace and control.

Without a point from their opening games, Newport started this game well with Abdul Njie keeping the defence on their toes, and as early as the 7th minute Aaron Stewart opened the scoring for the visitors when poor marking gave him room to get on the end of a corner to fire home from no more than 6 yards.

Jacob Daly was causing the Newport defence problems on the right and his cross gave Nathan Hosgood the chance for the equaliser but his header sailed over the crossbar when he should have scored.

A minute later keeper Chris Golton cleared upfield for Ebony Dixon to head on, Daly outpaced the Newport defence and shot home from the edge of the area for a deserved equaliser.

Newport had no answer to Daly on the right and from another clearance from the keeper he again got clear of the defenders but this time his shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

The home side took the lead in the 22nd minute and again it was the pace of the Dinas forwards that outdid the Newport defence. Following a throw David Brooks broke into the area and was brought down with the referee immediately pointing to the spot, and Geza Hajgato beat keeper Gareth Wesson.

Nathan Hosgood had a further chance to score with a low shot off-target but with only a goal advantage Newport always looked capable of scoring and substitute Daniel Chamberlain's 20 yard shot was off-target just before half-time.

Within two minutes of the second half Danny Kinsey rose above the Newport defence to head in a Geza Hajgato free-kick. Newport were still in the game and had plenty of possession but were unable to threaten the Dinas goal although keeper Chris Golton had to be alert to deal with a couple of dangerous crosses.

Fifteen minutes from time substitute David Avery put over a great cross but David Ham could only fire his shot straight at the keeper. In the gathering gloom the referee brought an end to proceedings with Dinas happy with the result if not the performance.
