DINAS POWYS 3
NEWPORT YMCA 1
WITH suspensions taking their toll on players available to manager Mark Jones, those such as Lloyd Davies, Josh Reffell, and Lee Barry - stepping up from the reserves - have certainly done their chances of future appearances no harm.
After a delayed start, Saturday's Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup round two game burst into life as early as the first minute, when early Dinas pressure forced a corner.
As soon as the ball reached the near post the referee blew for a penalty but the normally reliable Geza Hajgato placed his spot-kick too close to the keeper and Gareth Wesson was able to get a hand on it to push it round the post.
Despite this setback Dinas pushed on with Ebony Dixon getting a touch on a cross but the ball ran just wide of the post, and a Dale Gardner shot was safely held by the visitors keeper.
At the other end, when Newport were awarded a free-kick, the Dinas defence failed to clear and when the ball was played back into the area Aaron Stewart was tripped and the referee again pointed to the spot with Gareth Lynch making no mistake, firing past Chris Golton to take the lead.
With Liam Palmer shooting just wide and Ebony Dixon wasting a couple of glorious opportunities, it looked as though the home side were not going to be able to get the goal back before half-time.
But with just a few minutes left Jacob Daly did well on the left and put over low cross, the Newport defence could only clear as far as David Brook who drove the equaliser home from 12 yards.
Dinas were grateful to keeper Chris Golton with saves from Aaron Stewart and Craig Ford in the early stages of the second-half, before they went ahead.
David Brooks won the ball in midfield and played a good cross to Ebony Dixon who beat his defender and this time made sure with a low shot past Wesson from just 8 yards.
Newport's Leon Spargo was sent off for a bad challenge and Dinas were able to stretch the visitors' defence with Jacob Daly and David Brooks finding more space.
Daly appeared to be able to cut through the Newport defence almost at will, supplying a number of good crosses with no Dinas player able to get the finishing touch.
David Brooks forced another good save from Wesson but as seems inevitable this season, the home side could not keep their full complement of players on the pitch and substitute David Avery was sent off for swearing something the Welsh League and referees are rightly clamping down on this season.
Three minutes later Dinas were through to the next round.
Geza Hajgato did well to win the ball and feed Jacob Daly, his cross found substitute Richard Lane who drove the ball home from 12 yards.
With the visitors' defence all at sea the home side went close to adding to their three goals with Liam Palmer hitting the post and David Brooks'
attempt to chip the keeper just clearing the bar but Dinas had done enough to go through to the third round draw.
