Vale Schools lose tough cup encounter

7:00am Thursday 20th November 2008

D C Thomas Cup first round

Vale Schools 7

Newport Schools 21

FROM the kick-off at the Old Penarthians ground in Saturday, it was obvious that it was going to be a tough encounter, with both sets of forwards trying to gain the upper hand.

Mid way through the first half the Newport forwards won a ruck on the Vale 22 and the ball passed along the line for the winger to race in and score.

The try was converted (7-0).

The Vale team then showed a lot of spirit, and kept attacking the Newport line but the defending was good and they kept the Vale team at bay. From scrappy play on the halfway line Newport broke down the touch line and scored a second try which was converted (14-0). That's how it remained till half time.

The second half started with the Vale attacking, and from a ruck on the 22 Sion Jones picked up the ball and drove into the hart of Newport's defence.

As he got close to the try line he turned and scored under the posts. Dan Watts converted the try (14-7).

Newport came back at the Vale strongly, and it was only a matter of time despite Vale's good defence that they scored again. Picking up from the back of a scrum, the scrum half outpaced the defenders to score. The try was converterted (21-7). And that's how the game ended.

The Vale of Glamorgan Schools would like to wish Newport all the best for the next round of the Cup. Although disappointed Vale now set their sights on the plate competition.
