A VIEWING platform offering spectacular views of the Bristol Channel is set to be installed at the top of Penarth Head.
The improvements to Penarth Head Park, based at the end of Clive Crescent and Penarth Head Lane, are part of the Vale of Glamorgan council’s Parks Refurbishment scheme.
The park, which forms part of the Wales Coast Path, overlooks the likes of Penarth Pier, Flatholm and Steepholm, and Cardiff Bay.
The panoramic views will be improved by the installation of a stylised viewing platform to replace the old shelter, with a short ramp to assist with disabled access.
Visitors will also be given an insight into the history of the surrounding area, with the installation of interpretation panels noting points of interest across the channel.
Local artist Maureen O’Kane, who created the Compass Rose installation in Penarth in 2009, has also been commissioned to design a central mosaic seat in the viewing platform, which will be built in the shape of the Wales Coastal Path logo.
The scheme will also see refurbishments to the boundary railings and gates, as well as improvements to the park entrance leading southwards to Clive Crescent.
The popular park has been designated as one of the Quiet Areas in the Vale due its tranquillity and low levels of environmental noise.
Other parks in Penarth that have been designated as Quiet Areas include Belle Vue Park, Victoria Playing Fields and Alexandra Park.
Preparation work is set to begin this week, with the site mobilising and work beginning next week.
