Nine staff members at a mass vaccination centre under the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have tested positive for coronavirus, NHS bosses have confirmed.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said some workers have tested positive at the Splott vaccination centre and other staff members are being tested.

The other vaccination centres in the health board are at Holm View Leisure Centre in Barry and Pentwyn Leisure Centre.

It comes as new testing sites are being opened around the city due to a surge in cases, with Covid-19 infection rates in the Welsh capital having risen by 90% in the past week alone.

A spokesman for the health board said: “We can confirm that a number of staff have tested positive at one of our mass vaccination centres.

“We are implementing testing of staff at the centre and anyone that is identified as a close contact will be asked to self-isolate. Currently, no additional risk has been identified to anyone who has been vaccinated at the centre.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that the virus is still prevalent in our local communities and to please follow the guidance by maintaining social distancing, washing hands frequently, and wearing face coverings”.

The centre in Splott opened first last week to prioritise health care workers.

The centres in Barry and Pentwyn are not likely to be stood up until January in line with vaccination quantities expected through the UK government.
