A WOMAN who grew up in Dinas Powys is now a captain.

Jenny Curwood has recently been promoted to captain in the Royal Navy.

The daughter of Mrs Brenda Alden and the late Professor Jeremy Alden, Jenny Curwood grew up in Dinas Powys attending St Andrew’s Primary School (St Andrew's Road, Dinas Powys) and St Cyres School, (Sully Road, Penarth).

She graduated from University of Southampton in England with a degree in Geography.

During her time at the university she joined the University Royal Naval Unit.

On graduation she worked as a hydrologist in Penarth, but then decided to take a Post Graduate Certificate at St Anne’s College Oxford.

During her short teaching career she joined the Royal Naval Reserve in Bristol and it was there she was encouraged to join the Royal Navy full time.

Jenny Curwood went on to train at the Britannia Royal Navy College in Dartmouth.

She now specialises in logistics – this is a wide ranging remit.

Tours of duty include:

  • The Mediterranean;
  • USA;
  • Falklands;
  • Afghanistan.

Most recently she spent four years as Commander of Logistics on board HMS Queen Elizabeth – the new aircraft carrier which has just returned from the Far East.

She appeared in the series Warship filmed by the BBC and left the ship at Guam to take up the post of Captain in Logistics.
