A RESTAURANT in Penarth continues their soaring success, having just been honoured by the prestigious AA Hotel and Hospitality Services.
Home, on the town’s Stanwell Road, run by James Sommerin and daughter Georgia, was awarded three AA Rosettes recently – one of only two restaurants in the country to achieve the feet.
The other restaurant to receive the award in Wales was The Checkers, in Montgomery.
AA Rosettes are a renowned marker of excellence in the hospitality industry, having introduced the star rating scheme for quality in 1908 and inspected restaurants for the Rosette since 1956.
Speaking on Home, an AA inspector said its mysterious appearance is complimented by its homely feel.
“Mysterious from outside, with its blacked-out windows and curtained door, Home is a friendly, intimate space, with dark walls and wooden detailing,” said the inspector.
“The focus of the room is, of course, the kitchen – you’ll feel like you are right in amongst the action as James and daughter, Georgia, move calmly around their workspace preparing their daily-changing menus (four or eight courses)."
The inspector went on to describe the Sommerin’s sumptuous food.
“Things might kick off with generously-filled pea ravioli with sage and parmesan – a liquid pea centre with crispy Serrano ham and sage leaves, while main course cod might be accompanied by Japanese artichoke and cep mushroom.”
Home was noted for its mysterious appearence, but homely feel
Home recently featured in TV series Hairy Bikers Go Local - where the famous follicly resplendent bikers Simon ‘Si’ King and Dave Myers travelled the length of Britain in search of quality produce and the best culinary delights.
Si and Dave were, unsurprisingly, amazed by the food prepared by James and Georgia, purring superlatives such as “aww man it is just beautiful!”

Simon Numphud, managing director at AA Media, which operates the AA Rosette scheme, said the standard of the awards this year was as excellent as always.
“This year we’ve seen an exceptional level of culinary excellence demonstrated by those receiving our coveted AA Rosettes, and Home by James Sommerin and The Checkers are no exception,” said Mr Numphud.
“I’m constantly inspired by the resilience, innovation, and quality demonstrated by these trailblazers in our industry, and Wales is lucky to be home to such impressive restaurants. Congratulations to all the worthy winners.”
