IT’S ONE of the highlights of the season in Penarth and hails the start of summer as Penarth Lawn Tennis Club held their yearly music and street food festival.
Sold out weeks in advance the event has been a success every year in its short existence, however what helped this year’s festival was the glorious weather!
Couldn’t get to the Penarth Lawn Tennis Club music and street food festival? Watch our walk-through in the video below
Friends and families got out the shades, the hats and the sun tan lotion as they set out their picnic rugs and fold-up chairs on the club’s lawns and listened to fantastic live music played on the veranda of the tennis club clubhouse.
This was the fifth event, having started in 2017, with 2020 and 2021 cancelled due to Covid.
For 2023, there was food stalls and bars set up, including tacos, Indian street food, pizza, and dirty burgers, but probably the most important stall of the event was the Pimms stall as sun lovers queued up to get fresh jugs of the famous summer tipple – all in aid of raising funds for Motor Neurones Disease.
While there, we spoke to Ms Jan Jones who has a pretty vital connection to the festival – it was her husband Peter who began the festival in 2017.
Sadly Mr Jones is no longer with us, but Mrs Jones was there enjoying watching the people of Penarth revel in the laidback fun.
“It's fantastic” said Mrs Jones. “Peter started it and the guys here pulled out all the stops to keep it going. All the volunteers are fantastic and it’s great to see the event carried on so successfully in Peter’s name.”
There was a huge shoutout to all the volunteers who helped make the event happen – too many to name – however here’s a few major players who helped make the music and street food festival happen.
Some of the volunteers that made Penarth Lawn Tennis Club music and street food festival such a success
Chairman of the club Martin Radford; chief organiser Allan Cozen; head of bars Ben Coates; club coach and volunteer organiser Rob Cunningham; band organisers Paul Edwards and Alun Morgan; Gav Seymour on facilities, PR by Nick Skinner; and Rob Mahoney at the gate.
