THE chairman of a leading Penarth business group has said it is essential to for public services to be located in town centres as part of the efforts to rejuvenate high streets.

John Davies, chairman of Penarth Business Group, is urging the Cardiff and Vale Health Board to include the centre of Penarth in any plans for future medical services in the area.

It comes as a crucial meeting is to be held on the delicate future of health care in Penarth.

The health board is hosting an event at Penarth Leisure Centre looking into plans for a new “Wellbeing Hub” to serve the Eastern Vale region, including Penarth, Dinas Powys and Sully.

The hub is described as a facility which will provide integrated, community-focused health and wellbeing services, giving people access to primary care and a wider range of wellbeing services in the local community.

‘Plans need to be dropped’, says Penarth Business Group chairman

There are already concerns from the public that the wellbeing centre is to be built in the Cogan area, taking it out of Penarth centre and potentially making it difficult to get to due to the congestion often suffered on Cogan Hill.

John Davies, chairman of Penarth Business Group, says if the Wellbeing Hub is planned to be built in Cogan, these plans need to be dropped.

“All areas of government should be looking at putting their services in the town centre,” said Mr Davies.

“This proposal needs to be dropped and they (the health board) need to look at bringing GP services and other services to the town centre.

“The whole thing will sit a lot better rather than out on a limb in Cogan. This is part of the jigsaw of creating a town centre that people want to visit. There is something we can do here to make town centres more sustainable.

A spokesperson for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “There is no final decision about the location of the hub.

“The proposed Wellbeing Hub in Cogan would service people from all across the Eastern Vale region, including Penarth, Dinas Powys and Sully.

“Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is encouraging residents of the Eastern Vale to take part in a discussion on Monday.

“This public engagement session has been set up to discuss future of primary and community health and social care services in Eastern Vale of which the Wellbeing Hub will form an integral part of the conversation."
