THE WALKWAY and cycle path linking Penarth with Cardiff Bay has finally opened.

After months of delays, the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path - a public route for walkers and cyclists from the Marina to the city's inner harbour - opened on Friday morning.

An official opening had been planned for April, but a dispute between landowners caused a delay.

It is hoped the path will help alleviate some of the traffic congestion at the Baron's Court junction, as Penarthians who work in the Bay area can now walk or cycle directly across the barrage to work.

The long awaited link runs over a new bridge crossing Roath Basin lock, next to the Norwegian Church.

Cardiff Harbour Authority have developed and managed the project following access agreements with Associated British Ports.

Penarth AM Lorraine Barrett, who has campaigned for the path to be opened, walked to the Senedd, via the Barrage, on Monday morning.

"It was absolutely wonderful to walk to work - I feel invigorated," she said.

"The Barrage originally opened in 2001 and every year I've been told this walkway would open.

"The delays and hold-ups have been frustrating but having said that, it's open now.

"I spoke to one of the security men this morning and he said there have been lots of cyclists travelling back and forth, which is great.

"I might even ride to work now!"

Penarth Times reader Nina Ward, who sent us these pictures, was one of the first people to use the new path.

She said: "My husband and I were delighted to hear that, at long last, we were able to walk across the Barrage into Cardiff.

"We were not alone as we walked into Cardiff Bay - there were many other people enjoying the warm but windy day.

"In Cardiff Bay there was a new bridge to cross, then a choice of places to sit and watch the world go by and a variety of places to eat.

"It seems that the opening date had been kept a closely guarded secret - but it is open at last."

An official opening ceremony of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path will take place on July 10.
