PENARTH town centre has transformed over the past year, with businesses like Shaws closing and others re-opening in their place.

The High Street has seen a lot of changes to the area since January, here at the Penarth Times we look back at all the businesses that have opened in 2023.

Peacocks ­

The clothing retailer brought a new lease of life to the high street after opening its first store in Penarth two months ago.

The store opened on Windsor Road on Thursday, October 12, replacing M&Co which closed in the spring.

Pods at The Deck

The Deck on Penarth Marina expanded its business this summer by adding some unique accommodations to the waterfront.

Ten floating hotel pods were built at the marina in July and have been quite the success, they have already sold out when Taylor Swift visits Cardiff next summer.

Lushy’s Butchers

The original David Lush Butchers on Glebe Street closed last year after owners David Lush and wife Maureen retired.

Son Marcus decided to re-open the business from a timber framed unit behind Penarth Heights in August this year.

The Touring Club

This brand-new wine bar was opened by author and chef Bryn Williams at Penarth Heights this summer.

The business opened on Stanwell Road in June.

Travel House  

This travel company opened its 15th store in Penarth and is the only independent travel shop in the area.

The business opened on Glebe Street on Saturday, July 15

Flea Market

The flea market on Windsor Road extended its stay at the former old Kitchener store on Windsor Road in May.

The store has gone from strength to strength since opening, with many businesses setting up stalls inside.

Cancer Research Wales

The charity shop opened on Stanwell Road this summer replacing the family favourite store of Shaws the Drapers.

The shop opened on Saturday, July 22.

Gateway of India

This supermarket-like shop opened last month and specialises in cooked or frozen Indian favourites.

The shop replaced Not Socks Again on Windsor Terrace and opened on Sunday, November 19.

Thornton Travel

This was the second travel shop to open on Penarth High Street. The travel agent opened this summer.

Coming soon

Amici D’Italia will be opening a new Italian restaurant at the Penarth Sea Front, the new store will open sometime in January 2024.
