IT’S already expensive to live in Penarth, but now it seems it’s getting just as expensive to die.
Burial costs set by the town council are set to increase substantially, in one case by over £200.
Budgets were set for the coming year at a town council meeting on January 17 and one of the notable increases was in the amount it will cost to bury the dead.
Coffin burials in Penarth will cost £820 from April 2024.
In terms of individual depths – with there being three choices – one depth, two depth and three depth, it’s one depth burials which sees the biggest increase, with a rise of £216.
Two depth burials rise by £63, however a three-depth burial sees a reduction of £90.
The council said they looked at interment figures across the three depths and came to a proposed fee that would continue to maintain levels of income received towards the running costs at the cemetery.
They also noted they were still experiencing the impact of rising charges from contractors and that, despite the increase in some depths, the charges were still one of the lowest about compared to other authorities in South Wales – according to figures from a study by the South Wales Bereavement Forum.
