DESPITE it not being set in stone whether eastern Vale will get a brand new “super GP centre” the “Wellbeing Hub” to service people’s health needs, what seems to be certain is an important GP practice in the area will be moving to the hub.
Cardiff and Vale Health Board has confirmed Redlands Surgery in Penarth will move to the hub “when it is established”.
The news comes as contracts are being finalised for the health board to buy the building Redlands Surgery is situated in.
On Redlands Surgery, a spokesperson for the health board said: "The health board has been in negotiations to purchase the current building.
“We can confirm that negotiations have now concluded, and the health board is finalising contracts to be exchanged following the usual due diligence associated with a property purchase.
“This will be a temporary measure and will house Redlands Surgery until a Wellbeing Hub is established, allowing the practice to expand its offerings within the community."
How long will Redlands Surgery be based on Redlands Road and when does Eastern Vale get its Wellbeing Hub?
At the health board’s latest engagement session in the Murch Community Centre, Dinas Powys on December 11, representatives explained the timeline to establish a Wellbeing Hub.
Consultation on the hub runs for at least another year, with the next engagement session set for Sully in the new year.
Then, further down the line, the health board will submit a “full business case” to Welsh Government showing why a Wellbeing Hub is needed and the Labour administration can begin releasing funds (estimated to be in the region of £20m) for the diggers to start up and move in.
Where will Cardiff and Vale Health Board's new Wellbeing Hub be built?
This is still being debated, however the health board is looking at two particular options – Penarth Leisure Centre in Cogan adjoining the Wellbeing Hub to that, or the old police station on Windsor Road.
‘I do not think people know what a Wellbeing Hub is...’
That was the damning view of one Vale Councillor, Chris Franks who explained at the Dinas Powys engagement event that his constituents struggled to understand what a Wellbeing Hub is.
Despite the confusion, Wales Labour leader contender and MS for Penarth Vaughan Gething is behind the idea of Wellbeing Hubs.
Speaking to us while on the campaign trail, Mr Gething said Wellbeing Hubs are something the country will need more of.
“It makes it easier and more convenient not just to get access to health care, but actually get other health services which take place in the same venue and which will make it more convenient.”

On the purchase of Redlands Surgery, a health board spokesperson added: “The health board is committed to securing the future of Redlands Surgery and ensuring access to primary care services within Eastern Vale.
“We welcome the feedback given by the Eastern Vale residents and are encouraging everyone to engage with finding a suitable location for the proposed wellbeing hub.”
