A small pub in the heart of Penarth has won two awards for its fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease.
St Fagan’s Pub, on the corner of Windsor Road and Glebe Street, was taken over by husband-and-wife Debbie and Huw Jones in February.
Now, just two months after taking the helm, it has won two awards. The pub was awarded the Crafty Heroes community award for its contributions to charities and causes.
Mr and Mrs Jones have been commended for their recent fundraising efforts for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which involved raffles, quizzes and a charity Open mic event.
They were also awarded the Craft Union award for best social media content, Debbie told the Penarth Times that they were delighted with the news.
She said: “It’s amazing to get these awards and we are so proud as we have done a lot for the charity and it wouldn’t have been possible without the kind help from local businesses who donated raffle prizes.
“We are very happy that everyone has accepted us into the community and it feels like home for us.
“We are over the moon that locals and businesses have taken us under their wing, it's been fantastic.”
Mrs Jones claims that since The Penarth Times wrote a Pub of the Week article on them, business has been booming.
The couple have since reduced their prizes on their draught lager and ales and have even brought in premium lagers and ales with deals on shots to celebrate winning their awards.
Debbie added that it was a lovely birthday present as she celebrated her birthday yesterday (Wednesday, April 10).
“The pub of the week article has helped us, since it was published business has been fantastic and it has been busier than ever.
“It was a nice birthday present to receive the awards as we didn’t expect it, so it was a lovely surprise to find out.”
With the help of raffle prizes from local businesses such as Gwil’s Emporium, Divas Boutique, Rowleys Jewellers, Lilly Pad, Laurie Curtis Construction and Griffin Books, the couple has raised just under £500 for charity.
The new landlord and landlady have also started to sponsor Belle Vue Bowling Club and the Penarth local football team as they feel it's important to support the community.
The couple plan to celebrate the award with a party on Saturday, April 12, with two singers visiting the pub.
