AROUND 1,200 revellers celebrated a sunny bank holiday weekend at a vibrant festival in Penarth Town centre, reports Nick Skinner.

The five bands at the Penarth Lawn Tennis Club Music and Street Food Festival played to capacity crowds in brilliant sunshine.

The rain, which had been threatening for the last hour of the event, held off until the final band – Rock the Mike – were packing away their equipment.

“It was an amazing day,” said club chairman Martin Radford.

“We had a great diversity of brilliant bands and some spectacular food - and everyone  loved it.”

The annual festival ended with hundreds of people dancing on the grass in front of the clubhouse as the last of the day’s sun sank low in the sky.

“It was a great sight," added Mr Radford. "Small children dancing with their parents and grandparents in the sunshine. It’s not often you get community get-togethers as good as this.”

Dozens of club members volunteered to help with the event – some running the charity Pimm’s Stall which raised thousands of pounds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

“This is an entirely volunteer run club and events like these show just what we can do if we pull together,” said Martin Radford.

“Our members are brilliant at coming forward to volunteer to help with the running of the club. Whether it is cooking food for our Friday socials or manning the gate at a festival, we have an incredible community who make it all happen.”

Festival goers enjoyed street food from around the world as well as six hours of live bands.

The event – which sells out quickly every year – raises valuable money to allow the club to run a state-of-the-art sports facility in the town centre.
