With the summer holidays beginning, there are a number of events and places to go across the Vale of Glamorgan without breaking the bank.

One such location is Dyffryn Gardens, managed by the National Trust.

Near the villages of Dyffryn and St. Nicholas in Wales, this collection of botanic gardens spans 55 acres.

This summer, Dyffryn Gardens offers self-led walks and garden games with no booking required, although standard admission still applies.

The grounds also feature numerous natural play areas and are home to rare invertebrates, some of which have never been seen in Wales.

Over in Barry, Amelia Trust Farm is another recommendation for a budget-friendly family outing.

This 160-acre pastoral haven stages daily woodland walks and several animal interaction opportunities.

Amelia Trust Farm particularly focuses on helping disadvantaged or vulnerable youth in South Wales by using outdoor excursions and animal-tending duties to teach useful skills.

Just remember, feeding or petting the animals is not permitted as they are mainly rescue creatures.

For those after the charm of a traditional seaside holiday, visit Barry Island.

Here, you can lounge on golden beaches, play mini golf, or lose some change in the various arcade games.

Every Sunday at 2pm from July through to September, brass bands will perform for free at the Barry bandstand.

Nearby Ogmore-by-Sea is the place to go if you gravitate more towards a coastal stroll.

Visitors can forage for sea life, relax amidst the beautiful Welsh landscape or explore nearby Ogmore Castle and its stepping stones.

Grab a bite at Cobbles Deli, known for their hefty sandwiches made with fresh, local ingredients.

Yet another delightful spot is St. Donat's Castle.

This August 3-4, Street Food Circus will host the Fantastic Fete here, a modern spin on a summer fair featuring globally-inspired street food, an outdoor lido swimming pool, and circus acts.

The event will also feature the ‘world's biggest’ bouncy castle.

Entrance costs £8 plus a booking fee, but children get in free.
