A STORE on the high street is celebrating a year in Penarth.
In what’s a good news story for the often-embattled high street, Travel House, on Glebe Street, say they are finally 'established'.
It might be news to shoppers’ ears as Penarth’s high street seems to be in a constant state of upheaval at present.
Wetherspoons left the Bears Head, then Croeso Pubs reopened it on July 24.
The flea market next door is gone and boards and scaffolding are up round the old Kitcheners - now being steadily turned into two separate shops.
Then there’s the exciting work going on at the corner of Hickman Road, which recently, finally, saw the boards down to reveal a sleek and modern look to the building – in what’s to become a new restaurant for the town.
And let’s not forget the esplanade that saw Casa de Margarita move out and Eddies’ Italian Amici D’Italia move in.
There are also a lot of stores on the high street that have been celebrated in recent ‘independent retail awards’ including the Bike Shop – further up Glebe Street, Queen B Boutique, and Apothecary 64 in the never-to-be-forgotten Cornerswells Road high street.
Travel House, on Glebe Street, say their first year in town has gone exceptionally well.
“Trading wise we have had a very successful year and we are now well established in the area,” said manager Peter Daniell. “We have seen a big increase in traffic.”
Mr Daniell has an extensive career in the travel business – 28 years to be exact. He started his own business in Sully, but Covid put paid to that, so he joined Travel House in Penarth along with colleague Karen Masters – combined, the pair have 52 years’ experience putting together people’s holidays.
So, what’s the secret to providing a good holiday?
“We go into deep detail about what people want,” said Mr Daniell. “We really drill down and get the holiday people want, not what we are trying to sell them.”
With such experience in the travel trade, does Mr Daniell have a piece of advice to people planning a holiday in these times of ‘cost of living crisis’’?
“Book as early as you possibly can,” said Mr Daniell. “I’ll give you an example. You want to go on holiday in three weeks and park the car at Bristol Airport for a week? That’ll cost you £150. That same car park booking is currently £45 for this time next year, so book ahead and prices come down.”
