A TREE on one of Penarth’s main streets was chopped down.

The people of perfect Penarth love their trees – in fact many could argue the trees are a big factor in making Penarth so perfect.

However, one of these trees had to go from one of Penarth’s busiest streets due to an insurance claim.

A tree was recently cut down on Windsor Road between the Windsor pub and Windsor high street.

Windsor Road, like many roads in Penarth, is lined with trees that create green hallways.

And maybe Penarth is set to get more of those green hallways.

In March, Penarth Civic Society in collaboration with the Vale Council had ambitions to turn the town into a ‘woodland town status’.

A ‘woodland town status’ means a town which has at least 20 per cent tree canopy cover.

Civic Society chair Anne Evans explained the benefits of increased canopy coverage which included providing shade as summers get hotter, as well as biodiversity benefits.

The Vale of Glamorgan does have a tree strategy, running form 2024-2039, which looks at how to protect, manage and increase tree canopy cover to build resilience and help address climate change.

The strategy has extensive aims, a key one being to plant a minimum of 1,500 trees annually, which will include a minimum of 500 standards (2m tall trees), in predetermined targeted areas (right tree, right place), across the council estate.

In January, many local residents were concerned when two giant cypress trees were cut down at Alexandra Park (since been replaced).

On the latest tree cutting on Windsor Road, a Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: “This tree was removed by external contractors after an independent survey determined it needed to be removed as part of an insurance claim.”

What's your thoughts on Penarth's trees? Essential? Nuisance? Too many? Too few? Want more sun, or more shade?
