Developer Lovell recently hosted two educational site visits in South Wales for school students in the community scheme at St Mellons.

The development, on Crickhowell Road, is a £17.2m project by Lovell for Cardiff Council, replacing the former Youth and Community Centre.

St Mellons Community Living Project aims to provide 60 one and two-bedroom, self-contained apartments for social rent, geared towards high-quality, independent living for the elderly.

Lovell invited six students from Eastern High School and 10 from St Illtyd’s Catholic High School to the site.

The students were exposed to the inner workings of the construction industry through chats with Lovell senior site manager Neil Burman and site manager Dan Bevan.

Lovell community development coordinators Merial Gough and Charlotte Holder heightened their understanding of the various roles within the industry.

Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: "Giving back to the communities we build in is at the core of what we do at Lovell, so we were delighted to deliver these sessions."

She further expressed her hope that the students might have discovered an interest in the construction industry.

Nick Sparrow, Careers Wales adviser at St Illtyd’s Catholic High School, said: "There is so much value in taking pupils interested in any aspect of construction onto a site and to hear from people in the trade."

Acknowledging the inspiration women working for Lovell posed to the female students, he hailed the site visit as a beneficial initiative.

Cllr Lynda Thorne, cabinet member for housing and communities, said: "It’s great to see our partners active in local communities, where are working together to create more affordable homes.

"I’m sure the pupils from Eastern High and St Illtyd’s appreciated this chance to learn about our new community living scheme in St Mellons."
