A Penarth-based club is celebrating a mental health initiative milestone—passing its original target of 'Speakeasy benches.'

The Speakeasy Club, which aims to provide free wellbeing and mental health resources at every community sports venue globally, has exceeded its initial target.

The Speakeasy Bench project originally aimed to place ten benches in communities by October 10.

However, the initiative now boasts 25 benches across South and West Wales, the Valleys, and Sheffield.

These are strategically located in community sports venues, hospices, cafes, and businesses.

The Speakeasy Bench is not just a place to sit, but also a symbol of inclusion and resilience.

Each bench carries the message: "Being different is cool," fostering support within the community.

Simon Clarke, founder of Speakeasy Club, said: "We’re thrilled to have exceeded our initial target.

"This project is about breaking down the barriers surrounding mental health by offering something simple, yet powerful—a bench to start the conversation.

"Every new bench is a reminder that mental health matters in every community."

The project has been made possible thanks to the support of 22 venues, including Cardiff Arms Park, Rodney Parade, and Hillsborough stadiums, as well as organisations such as the National Lottery Community Fund and several corporate partners.

Reflecting on his own mental health journey, Mr Clarke shared: "If I had access to these resources in places I visited regularly, maybe I wouldn’t have found myself on the edge of a cliff at Barry Island."

The initiative is already making a significant impact, providing both a literal and metaphorical space for people to pause, reflect, and seek support.

On September 27, a group of 25 took on the Bench2Bench Challenge, walking 40 miles from RTB Ebbw Vale Bowls Club to Old Penarthians Rugby Club and passing eight Speakeasy benches.

This initiative raised nearly £5,000 for charity and sparked many meaningful conversations.

The Speakeasy Club plans to continue expanding its reach, with a minimum of 60 benches set to be in place in the coming months.
