THE PENARTH Ex-Servicemen's Club opened by King George, which worried it may close back in 2011, has been renovated.

The renovations include the installation of air conditioning throughout the property, the roof being recovered, and floor being re-laid.

The outdated skittle alley has been replaced by a double function area offering two skittle alleys and a venue, ‘Music Alley’, for parties and music nights.

The next ‘Music Alley’ event, Hi Fi-ve, will be taking place on Saturday October 12, 2024.

Paul Galsworthy, chairman of the club said: “We at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Penarth pride ourselves on offering the community of Penarth a venue to come and enjoy.

“We have old and new members. Our oldest member who regularly visits the club and is in the Ex’s “Cs” skittle side and a good friend, is 91 years old, Cliffy Bridges.”

The renovation journey

In 2011, the Penarth Ex-Servicemen's Club went through a rough patch and thought they may have to close down.

However, after a lot of hard work the club has turned it around and renovated the building.

“We went through a really bad patch in 2011, when we thought we would lose our club, but since then we have turned the club around, decorating every bit of the club.

“We stand on our own feet financially due to our members and staff pulling together and welcoming newcomers - including non-members, who are always very welcome,” added Paul.

The club will shortly be entering into a crowd funding to raise money for an access ramp and outside and disabled toilets, which they have been trying to fund for several years.

The Penarth Ex-Servicemen’s Club was opened by former King George

In 1921, the club was officially opened by the late Queen’s father (then Prince Albert later crowned King George).

“Although we wanted to celebrate our Centenary unfortunately ‘covid’ struck, so we are now after all this time looking forward to planning a big event,” said Paul.

The club has Sky and four large TVs to show residents favorite teams and events.

It would like to announce that they will soon be looking for quizzers/comedians/players and entertainers.
