A PLANNING application has been submitted for an extension to a school building for a medical resource base.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has proposed a single-story extension to accommodate a medical resource base.

The extension for the medical centre will be constructed at St Cyres School on Sully Road in Penarth.

The planning application was submitted by the Vale of Glamorgan council on September 17, 2024.

The medical resource base will be a facility for pupils with additional medical requirements.

It is being built to support students with additional medical requirements in a mainstream setting.

The facilities in the medical resource base will include a hygiene room, circulation, sensory/rest and recovery room, a learning space and a study room.

The front doors will lead into the main lobby with an accessible toilet on the left and a hygiene and physiotherapy room to the right of the building.

The sensory and rest and recovery room will be in front of the hygiene room and there will be an open plan learning space next to two study rooms.

The application will be subject to consultation with organisations, council departments and companies.

These include the Penarth Town Council, Highway Development and Welsh Water, the Council’s Drainage Section, Contaminated Land, Air and Water quality etc.

Kai Peake, an architectural officer at the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: “The facility is for students within the school who have additional medical requirements.

“It will allow pupils who have additional requirements to be taught in a mainstream setting. It will be a base where they can go to with physio rooms etc.”

Externally the tarmac outside will be extended to maintain access, an additional ornamental planting area will be installed, and a cycle stand will be relocated.

St. Cyres School is an 11 to 18 mixed English medium, non-denominational Comprehensive School.

The school has approximately 1250 pupils in Years 7-13 on the outskirts of Penarth.

St Cyres School has access to a number of professionals for students with additional learning needs (ALN).

These include speech and language therapists, a physiotherapist, an orthotist, an occupational therapist and a psychologist.
