A busy Cardiff junction will continue to be closed during certain hours over the next week.

The city council started carrying out resurfacing work near Penylan Library, off Ninian Road, last week.

However, it issued a notice on Thursday, October 31, saying it would close certain sections of Ninian Road, Marlborough Road, Penylan Road and Wellfield Road from November 2, effectively closing the junction between all four roads.

Cardiff Council said it will carry out the work in the evening to minimise disruption.

The resurfacing works will affect the junction during the following days and hours, subject to weather conditions:

  • Monday, November 4 – 7pm – 5am
  • Thursday, November 7 – 7pm – 5am
  • Friday, November 8 – 7pm – 11pm
  • Monday, November 11 – 7pm – 11pm
  • Tuesday, November 12 – 7pm – 11pm

Cardiff Council’s notice states the following road closures will be in place:

  • Ninian Road from the junction with Montgomery Street to its junction with Werfa Street
  • Ninian Road from the junction with Hendy Street to its junction with Boverton Street
  • Ninian Road from the junction with Penylan Road to Montgomery Street
  • Penylan Road from Ninian Road to Ty Draw Road
  • Marlborough Road from Penylan Road to Balaclava Road
  • Wellfield Road from Ninian Road to Bangor Lane

The local authority was recently criticised for the way it carried out work to build a new shared pedestrian and cycle path in the nearby Roath Recreational Ground.

Work at the grade I-listed park is part of a wider scheme to improve safety and promote travel by walking and cycling in the area, but a number of councillors, residents and other stakeholders said the council should have consulted better with people on the plans.

The shared path which is being built was described at a recent council scrutiny committee meeting as a “great big black tarmac… road” by one resident.

Council officials said Welsh Government policy dictated the path should be 5m wide and that it will be an “amazing” facility once finished.

The multi-million pound Roath Rec project will also involve changes to the Ninian Road/Penylan Road/Marlborough Road/Wellfield Road junction.

Right turns from from Wellfield Road on to Marlborough Road will be prohibited, as will right turns from Marlborough Road onto Penylan Road.

Residents living towards Marlborough Primary School have raised concerns about this, saying it will increase traffic in their community.

However, Cardiff Council said these restrictions are needed to reduce the delay to traffic at the junction.
