TRAIN SERVICES from Penarth to Cardiff are up and running again after disruptions 'deeply frustrated’ residents.

In recent weeks, local residents expressed their ‘deep frustration’ over persistent train delays.

However, the signs at Penarth and Dingle Road train station are once again reading ‘Coryton’ and ‘on time’.

The train services from Penarth to Cardiff central had been impacted by reduced services for the electrification of the Coryton line.

This left dozens of commuters waiting at Penarth and Dingle station for trains that on several occasions never arrived.

The disruptions deeply frustrated residents trying to get to work

The platform at Dingle Road station was filled with commuters waiting over half an hour for a train that ended up being cancelled, on October 9, 2024.

A local resident, Rebecca Morgan said: “I love the trains but (I’m) really frustrated at the lack of early morning trains and cost as I now have to rely on a taxi.”

Another resident, Richard Jenkins said he had ‘given up’ taking the train to work because it is 'not worth the hassle'.

What was causing the delays and disruptions?

On October 15, a spokesperson for Transport for Wales addressing the cancellations said:

“Penarth services will be temporarily reduced to 2 services per hour, with services at half hour intervals travelling between Penarth, Cardiff, and Caerphilly until Sunday 20 October.

“A rail replacement service is in place with buses running every half an hour.

“TfW apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and thank passengers for their patience and understanding during this important phase of the South Wales Metro project."

A week of rail replacement buses

The Penarth to Cardiff train service for the week of Monday October 28 had rail replacements buses due to ‘engineering work taking place on the line’.

The rail replacement bus services transported those travelling between Penarth and Cardiff Central for the week.

The trains are back on track

On November 3, Cllr Anthony Ernest, in a post on social media, said: “Trains from Penarth should be back on once again.

“According to Transport for Wales the nationalized rail service from Penarth Town and Dingle Road should have restarted again.”
