THIS YEAR several Remembrance events were held in Penarth to commemorate the sacrifices made by the armed forces.
The Festival of Remembrance included many contributions from local businesses, schools and public spaces with five main organised events between November 6 and 11.
Mr Greg Olphert, this year’s chair of the Penarth Festival Remembrance said:
“It is now so large that it is impossible to thank and name each and every person, but you know who you are, and we thank you.”
Penarth Pier Pavilion decorated as an ‘Act of Remembrance’
Penarth Pier Pavilion was illuminated up and decorated as an ‘Act of Remembrance’ from Wednesday November 6.
A team of volunteers from Stanwell decorated the pier and put up some information boards.
“Some of the adult volunteers have been decorating the pavilion since they themselves were in Stanwell School in year 7 themselves.
“We know it really means a lot to a lot of people, and it’s so important to pass on Remembrance to the next generations,” added the chair.
The youth liaison Kath Fisher has been very impressed by the memory board on display at the Pier Pavilion and the contribution of Albert Road School at the Penarth Library.
The activities of Ysgol Y Deri supporting the cause within their own school were also acknowledged.
For the Fallen – Remembrance Concert 2024
The For the Fallen – Remembrance Concert 2024 was held by the Vale of Glamorgan Brass Band at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Plassey Street on Saturday, November 9.
“What an absolutely brilliant night was delivered by VoGBB, a young trainee band and the Penarth Salvation Army Choir.
“It was truly an inspiring, moving, fitting tribute and an amazing act of Remembrance, one we would encourage everyone to attend next year,” said the chair.
The Standard Bearers lowered the banners out over the hall from balconies during the last post and moving finale.
All the donations went direct to the Poppy Appeal and the results of the Poppy reveal will be revealed at a later date.
This year’s Chair of which Will Henry a serving RAF Officer ask that we pass on our sincere and heartfelt thanks.
The Remembrance Sunday activities
The activities began at the Garden of Remembrance which was created in 1934 near the Rectory Road entrance to Alexandra Park.
It is a place for families to bring their personal acts of remembrance and for all organisations and schools to participate in passing the torch to the next generation.
An example of which is the lovely painted memorial pebbles prepared and left by Victoria Primary Schools learners.
The procession then walked to Church Parade at All Saints Victoria Square Penarth for the formal Act of at 11am led by Reverend Jimmy Young.
The Festival of Remembrance would like to thank South Wales Police, Sergeant Sam Johnson, and the team of volunteer marshals.
After the service the Pipe and Drum band led the reformed parade of Veterans, Serving Armed forces, RLNI, Coast Guard and Cadet Organisations through Penarth Town Centre.
The Festival Ended with a lovely and well attended ‘Armistice Day’ outdoor service on the 11th hour of the 11th day of 11th month held at Windsor Road.
