Two senior officers from The Vale Council have been overpaid by more than £5k, according to a committee.
The senior officers between them were overpaid by a joint sum of £5,000.
This information was revealed at the Vale’s latest Governance and Audit Committee meeting.
In a report published at the meeting documents stated:
"Two small overpayments were made to two Chief Officers in 2023/24 and as the current Chief Officer’s contract gives no legal basis for recovery.
"Following extensive discussion with the Chief Executive, the Director for Corporate Resources determined it was appropriate to use their Delegated Powers in respect of waiving recovery of overpayments under the Council’s constitution."
Councillor for Baruc Mark Hooper commented on this issue.
He told Barry and District News: “These two officers decided along with the council to keep the money in their pockets instead of giving the money back which I find really concerning.
“It creates a huge number of warning signals about the council’s attitude towards this.”
A spokesperson for the Vale Council said: “The overpayment highlighted by Audit Wales relates to an agreement for one former member of staff to work across two local authorities and another current member of staff to work temporarily at a higher level to allow this.
“Salary adjustments were put in place but processed incorrectly. This resulted in overpayments over seven months totalling £2,409 and £2,888.
“The error has helped identify some inconsistencies in historic contractual arrangements of very small numbers of chief officers. These contractual arrangements are now being updated accordingly.”
