PENARTH residents want to share their views on whether 20mph roads in the local area should be reverted back to 30mph.
While there has been positive initial crash and injury data the decision has still proved controversial since it came into force last year.
The Welsh Government launched a massive review exploring returning some highways to 30mph.
Local residents raised questions on social media
In an anonymous post, a local resident, addressing Cllr Anthony Ernest, said:
“Can you Please confirm which, if any of the 20mph roads in Penarth and the Vale will be reverting to 30mph?”
Cllr Anthony Ernest replied: “At present we have no information on your query. A report will come to Cabinet, sometime, but no date yet give.”
Residents of both sides of the argument want to give their input
In the comment section, residents shared differing opinions, some calling for certain roads to be reversed, while others saying they prefer 20mph roads.
In response to the councillor’s answer, Dave Mathias said: “How can we have an influence to revert from 20 to 30mph if we object to it being changed?”
The question was also raised by a resident supporting the continuation of 20mph.
Nicola Hughes who also replied said: “Likewise how can we register support for continuation of 20mph.”
What does the Welsh Government have to say?
In reply to both of their questions, Cllr Anthony Ernest said: “As we can all read, there is very mixed opinion on this subject.
“We have not seen any legal criteria as yet to help determine future policy. That is down to the Welsh Government in the first instance.”
In the comment section, some called for certain roads to be reverted to 30mph while others said they felt safer with 20mph roads.
There are opinions on both sides
Paul Fenton, a local resident, said: “I personally sent my request to the council for the ludicrous 20mph imposed in Redlands Road/Lavernock to be reverted back to the previous 30mph limit.
“This road is one of two arterial routes to Barry from Penarth. As soon as you reach Barry all the main roads have remained at the 30mph.”
However, another resident, Laura Humphrey said: “I personally feel much safer walking, crossing the road and cycling on Redlands Road now.
“I agree 20mph is appropriate for this road, especially with all the schools close to it.”
The Welsh Government says it is encouraging highway authorities to make changes at a local level
A Welsh Government spokesperson, in response to the comments on social media, said:
“We’ve empowered highway authorities to make changes at a local level to reflect local circumstances and get the right speeds on the right roads.
“Councils acting as the local highway authorities have now started the formal process of reviewing their 20mph roads based on the revised guidance and the feedback they received."
Will there be an opportunity for residents to share their views?
The Welsh Government spokesperson added: "Councils will continue to encourage people to share their views and will undertake a public consultation before a final decision is taken to change the speed limit.
“20mph remains the default.”
