A service managed by Vale of Glamorgan Council has raised funds for new gym equipment.

The National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS), a programme funded by Public Health Wales and operated by the council's healthy living team, held a 5km sponsored walk to raise funds for new gym equipment at Penarth Leisure Centre.

The scheme has been helping individuals improve their fitness and overall health since 2007.

The 5km route, which wound through Penarth, allowed participants to enjoy scenic highlights such as the pier and the Esplanade.

The event saw community members, NERS participants, and local supporters coming together to promote physical activity and support the scheme.

Craig Nichol, one of the event organisers, said: "I am so pleased with the number of people who have turned out in support of the programme today.

"It shows how much it means to so many people and what a difference our programme can make to people.

"We are also trying to highlight the importance of variety of activity and also the ease with which you can slot physical activity into your life.

"All you need is a little time and a pair of shoes and you can enjoy a nice walk like we have today.

"We are grateful to the support of the group and their choice of the two recline bikes for the NERS studio in Penarth Leisure Centre.

"The bikes will be a great aid for the programme and help many more people improve their health and fitness."

The funds raised from the walk have gone towards the purchase of two new reclined bikes for the NERS Studio at Penarth Leisure Centre.

These additions will provide crucial support for participants working to improve their health and manage chronic conditions.

NERS allows health professionals to refer patients to a local scheme where they can access skilled instructors offering tailored exercise and lifestyle advice.

Participants benefit from 16 weeks of low-cost exercise sessions, with the goal of increasing physical activity levels and enhancing overall wellbeing.

The scheme is open to individuals who would benefit from a more active lifestyle, and those interested can find more information on the council's website.
