Former Penarth backrower Evan Lloyd made his international debut as a late replacement in Sunday’s 45-24 defeat to France in Cardiff.
The Penarth-born hooker came off the replacements bench for Elliot Dee in the second half to earn his first Wales cap.
The 22-year-old was called up to the squad as a late replacement for Ryan Elias who was withdrawn due to injury.
After the match, he spoke of his late call-up and the feeling of playing for Wales at the Principality Stadium.
“It was late notice, but I think I preferred that I didn’t have time to overthink about it. I was calm and relaxed and then we went down Westgate Street and all the fans were there it was just, it hit me then,” said Lloyd.
“That’s when I felt a bit of pressure, but I was trying to take in the moment and everything. Looking around and seeing the place fill up and then on the bench the reaction when boys were scoring and just yeah, it was an unreal feeling really.”
His hometown club in Penarth were behind the former Stanwell School pupil as he made his debut in the 71st minute.
Sean O’Sullivan, Chairman of Penarth RFC told the Penarth Times that it was incredible to see a youngster who came through the minis and juniors make their debut for Wales.
He added: “It was a fantastic and immense occasion to see Evan make his international debut, he came through the minis and juniors and his brother coaches the youth side.
“It's incredible for him to run out as a Penarth player and it’s what you hope will happen when a child joins the club at under eight that one day they will play for Wales.
“He has always been a brilliant player and it was amazing. It was an amazing indication for the club and what we are trying to produce.”
Wales face Italy in the last round of the Guinness Six Nations at the Principality Stadium and are hoping to avoid finishing bottom of the table.
Wales have not suffered five defeats in the Six Nations since 2003 where they were given the wooden spoon.
